Once upon a time, when beasts and creatures roamed the earth, there were four among them that watched over all of creation. From the north watched a creature of light, who is shaped like a bird; from the south, a creature of blood, who is shaped like a wolf. From the east watched a creature of fire, shaped like a dragon, and from the west watched a creature of darkness, shaped like a stag. They kept vigil over the world, until a great flood rose from the depths and swallowed everything that the eye could see. The four survived the flood. And as time passed, they watched new creatures spring up from the earth, smaller but smarter than the ones that came before. These soft things claimed the earth for themselves, slowly pushing the old ones out to the edges of the world and forcing them into a great sleep. —Fast-forward to the present-day, and the four are being awakened, their memories of the old world sharpening to clarity with every passing day. Meanwhile the great storm is rising again, shaking loose the few that hidden away in the darkness. The tides are rising. Welcome to the new age. |
